In today's globalised multicultural world, it is becoming important to interact and communicate with people from diverse background all over the world. To compete and survive in this new era, knowledge of a foreign language and culture has become a necessity. Besides business prospects and career opportunities, knowledge of a foreign language is very essential for studying abroad, travel, research, enhancing subject knowledge, cultural exchange and for many other reasons.
From the academic year 2007- 08, Mumbai University in the revised syllabus, introduced a Foreign Language (French or German or Japanese) as an elective subject for MMS Course in Semester II of 1st year. Considering its importance, we introduced French language to our students. In the year 2009- 10, while continuing to offer French, we also offered German Language as an added choice for an elective subject.
Foreign Language Study Cell: This was established at DR VN BRIMS 2008, which in addition to working on methods and studies for enhancing language education, looks after the placement opportunities for language students and guides them on scope and new avenues for the knowledge of Foreign Languages. The cell organizes guest lectures on topics pertaining to foreign languages. In order to enhance cross cultural interaction and exchange views and ideas, we invite delegates from different foreign countries and foreign consulates in India. In the year 2008, Mr. Yamaguchi Hiroshi- Chairman of Ichikawa Japanese language Institute –Chiba, Japan visited the institute. In the academic year 2009, Mr. Torikai, Consul from Consulate General of Japan, Mumbai visited the institute. A bit later Mr. Shinichi Iida, the new Consul from Consulate General of Japan, Mumbai visited the institute.
In our language Lab, with the help of lingua phone machines, audio CDs and textbooks students can practice accent, pronunciation and oral comprehension. In order to cultivate interest in foreign language learning, films from different foreign languages are also screened.
