When we talk about operations management, the immediate picture that comes into our mind is that of a factory, operators with a helmet who are sweating, greasy machines, gears, cranes and too much of machinery sound. But operations management is much beyond all this.
There is a myth about operations management that it is applicable only for manufacturing industry but reality is that it is applicable in service industry too. Because when we state OPERATION in manufacturing sector it is related to manufacturing process & related activities & in service sector, it is related to design effective SOPs (Standard of Processes) & executing them effectively.
But when we learn operations management concepts in class room there must be practical exposure of those concepts which needs to be executed simultaneously & this is what happens at BRIMS.
So the question arises that how can we have practical experience of Operations Management at the institute?
1. Teach the concept.
2. Share industry examples related to that concept through simulations that it will create real picture in student’s mind
3. Give one activity for which they can survey the nearby area to observe the process or problem, study that situation through brain storming technique
4. Observation of processes in the industry through various industrial visits.
5. Discussion/interaction among the teams & their learning’s.
6. Suggestions/comment by faculty.
At BRIMS, we follow case study approach, interactive discussions to make the learning more innovative and practical (though Simulation). Frequent industry visit helps students to make a strong foundation for their future. BRIMS always encourage their students to participate in industry wise conference & competitions.
For Operations management, BRIMS often integrate industry experts into the classroom experience through executive presentations, seminars, guest lecturers which helps students to get detailed industry insights.
This kind of approach at BRIMS penetrates the concept of operations deeply in the mind of students and they try to relate their learning’s when they start working.
If students understand the operations management thoroughly, they would observe that it has become a part of their daily activities as they start wearing the spectacles of Operations in anything and everything they do.
