The word skill is very commonly used by Everybody and people talk about a wide of skills While referring to a handbook on Study Skill by Prabir Biswas from IGNOU few questions popped in my mind . What this handbook could be talking about. Being from the same industry I have seen a lot of learners either not enjoying their study or failing to connect with the content. Based on my observation I have observed that different people have different styles Of learning. Especially if the learner is in the self study mode the reading strategy could be SQ3R technique or RWR or SQ5WR and so on.
S: survey
Q: Question
3R: Read, Recite, Review . RWR technique is one which I had learned from our Director General Dr Guruprasad Murthy where R stands for Read, W stands for write and R stands for Recite.
In the SQ5WR, 5 W stands for who, what, when, where, and why. I personally like the Q part of the technique. The questions coming in the mind of the learner are in a position to set the purpose of the study. It can also be said that purpose of reading is set by first developing questions around the content. One may gather information from the content, sub topics, headings etc and start developing questions which need to be answered. If the learner is in a position to create few questions in the beginning of the study then after going through the basic content he is in a process of establishing the purpose for study.
If the purpose is properly established and during his reading if the learner sees that purpose is getting achieved and questions raised in his mind are getting answered then he enjoys the learning but in case this process is not happening with the learner then he is unable to concentrate and the joy of learning stops as he is unable to establish the purpose for reading. The process of asking questions and creating a clear purpose will help the learner develop the study Skills.
