The role of women has undergone tremendous change in past couple of decades. Women have reached greater heights in various professions. We see women as pilots, astronauts, engineers, doctors, researchers, scientists, academicians, sportspersons and the list goes on. It is a very positive scenario that there has been an increase in the number of women entrepreneurs over the years. This article is an attempt to understand the management skills required for women entrepreneurs.
Women by nature are good at multiskilling and they are excellent managers too. Time management is a very important factor for all women in general and women entrepreneurs in particular because entrepreneurship is a full time commitment and lingers in the mind 24 by 7. Networking is one of the important priorities for an entrepreneur to be successful. Thus as entrepreneurs, women need to come out of their shells and hone the networking skills. It is always beneficial to be well connected which is possible only through networking.
Though women are capable of handling many things at the same time, it is crucial to learn the art of delegation because entrepreneurship is not about ‘doing it all by myself’ but about ‘getting things done’.
As entrepreneurs women have to coordinate with various stakeholders viz. employees, vendors, suppliers, financers, various government bodies, customers, clients, and so on. Thus they need to have the ability of liasioning and coordinating. Needless to say that they have to excel in human relations skills too.
Running a business is like a tight rope walk and hence critical thinking and creative problem solving skills are also very crucial. They also need to develop decision making skills.
Women entrepreneurs have to incessantly combat the stereotypes that the society holds against ‘women’ as ‘entrepreneurs’. They are under continuous public scrutiny even when they are very efficient and effective at their task. On several occasions, women entrepreneurs have to encounter gender bias. Women need to be bold enough to face this bravely.
Women need to maintain a high level of emotional quotient during crisis. They are also required to exhibit emotional intelligence while handling the challenges that they face while running a business.
Moreover they must have the courage and ability to take risk. As entrepreneurs they need to continuously evolve and innovate in order to maintain the competitive edge.
In most of the countries, the majority of entrepreneurs are male. However there is an increase in the number of female entrepreneurs. Given their potential and abilities, women can definitely become successful entrepreneurs.
