As the world converges to be come on global village, there are numerous global opportunities for business management students.
Dr. V. N. Bedekar Institute Of Management Studies (BRIMS), one of the leading B-Schools in Mumbai, organises a Global Immersion Program every year, for the students pursuing Post Graduate Diploma in Management. This year the students went on a 5-day immersion program to Singapore. In these 5 days, the students explored and observed the aspects of a developed city, its businesses and the planning of one of the leading cities in the world.
Singapore is one of the leading developed country and it is commendable to note that a country so small in size could evolve into a global financial and trade centre with a multi-cultural population. The advanced system of
civic governance, adoption of technology in daily lives, a futuristic city planning, tourist friendly-environment and conducive environment business growth makes Singapore a classic model of study.
The PGDM students of BRIMS visit the Singapore Management University, National Singapore University, Yakult Factory and the NEWwater plant every year.
This year the itinerary was very thoughtfully created and began with a visit to the James Cook University. Here the students experienced an international academic setting, a finance laboratory, sponsored hydroponic greenhouse horticulture project within the campus and an academic research environment.
Guan Hinn Coffee Factory, a famous and historical coffee bean processing plant on the list of academic excursions. Mr. Chew Theng Guan, owner of the factory explained the process of manufacturing coffee powder from the owner himself, In the age of machines and automation, the Guan Hinn Coffee Factory relies on human interventions to produce one of the best coffees in Singapore.
To nurture global entrepreneurship in the students, a session was arranged with Mr Abhijeet Thakur – an India origin entrepreneur in Singapore. BRIMS is in discussion with entrepreneurs in Singapore for opportunities of International Internship.
The prime highlight of the program was the visit to the Singapore Exchange, where the students attended an Investment Outlook and Sustainability Debate organised by the Securities Association of Singapore. The speakers panel had top management level professional and included a law firm partner, sustainability services consultants, head of corporate governance and leading researchers. These eminent members debated and presented their tale on two opposing views of sustainability and impact on investment strategies.
A grim concern of resource shortage looms over India. It was imperative that the students get a demonstration on the need for sustainability. Which is why the students were taken for an exclusive tour of the Marina Barrage that houses the state-of-the-art Sustainable Singapore Gallery. The gallery showcases and visually represents the journey of Singapore in adopting the 3R philosophy – reduce, reuse and recycle. This gave a serious food for thought on how can India adopt this model and overcome the scarcity of resources using advanced models of waste management and resource use.
The program also included some leisure activity which was clubbed with learning through observation and experience. The students explored the Universal Studios at Sentosa, Singapore. This was a novel experience where the students not only engaged in entertainment but also got a first hand experience of entertainment management. The flawless management, impeccable hospitality, safety protocols, customer service and operations of the Universal Studio is an exemplary demonstration of world-class management. From the simplest innovation to engage tourists in a queue using entertaining gadgets to general upkeep and maintenance of the place was a field learning for the students.
While management education is all about strategies, business functions and business growth, it is imperative that the young generation be sensitized about the responsibility of a business towards all stakeholders, which also includes the community at large. BRIMS manoeuvres students to not only develop 21 st century skills, but also nurtures problem-solving and innovation to be able to contribute to the development of the country at large.
