Dr. V. N. Bedekar Institute of Management Studies (BRIMS), one of the leading B-Schools in Thane, organises a Global Immersion Program every year, for the students pursuing Post Graduate Diploma in Management. This year also the students went on a 5-day immersion program to Singapore. In these 5 days, the students explored and observed the aspects of a developed city, its businesses and the planning of one of the leading cities in the world.
Singapore is one of the leading developed country and it is commendable to note that a country so small in size could evolve into a global financial and trade centre with a multi-cultural population. The advanced system of civic governance, adoption of technology in daily lives, a futuristic city planning, tourist friendly-environment and conducive environment business growth makes Singapore a classic model of study.
The PGDM students of BRIMS visited the Kaplan University, Yakult Factory, Marina Barrage, Gardens by the Bay, Universal Studio at Singapore. Students also got an opportunity to attend the live session on global entrepreneurship by Mr Abhijeet Thakur who is an Indian Origin Entrepreneur in Singapore.
This year the itinerary was very thoughtfully created and began with a visit to the Kaplan University. Here the students were amazed to see the attractive and praise worthy infrastructure. The three storey building is located in the heart of the city. The first level has a cafeteria offering beverages & relaxation, second level includes classrooms and a library and the third level has unique classrooms. These classrooms are incorporated with Synergy Pods also known as “Classrooms of the Future”. It is a comprehensive blended learning platform that integrates conventional classroom learning with technologically-mediated resources to enhance the student learning experience and engagement. These modern classrooms were built in mind to encourage teacher-student discussion and peer to peer collaboration providing a dynamic and interactive experience for the students.
During the Yakult Factory Visit, students were able to evaluate the beverage operational control process and had a closer look at manufacturing plant.
Their fully trained public relations staff gave a presentation on the background of the company and its products. Following this, students got an opportunity to watch a scientific documentary on the benefits of probiotics. Students also enjoyed a complimentary bottle of Yakult during the presentation.
After the presentation, students were able to see the entire high-tech production process through the glass-walled viewing gallery. The glass walls were specially constructed to provide clear viewing and prevent contamination, accidents and interferences on the factory floor so that visitors can view what goes into Yakult without having to watch their steps.
In order to gain knowledge towards the need of sustainable development students were taken to Marina Barrage which is an innovative reservoir that not only supplies fresh water to the country and helps alleviate floods, but also doubles up as a place for family fun. To find out more about the country’s efforts to go green, students were taken to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery at the barrage’s ground floor. This educational space illustrates environmental and water issues through interactive multimedia displays, exhibits and games, with a guided tour available at the gallery. This helped students to gain a wider perspective towards the methods of overcoming the problem of resource scarcity in India.
This unusual garden reminds you of paying it at least once in a life time visit ...! To explore its beauty one can go early morning or at the evening wherein the cool breeze makes you forget about all your worries. Gardens by the bay is an excellent example of how the island country has taken sustainable steps in conserving of the ecosystem. It is centrally located in Singapore adjacent to the Marina Reservoir. The key concept behind the structure is inspired from orchids, and as it is also considered as Singapore’s national flower. The blooms of the supertrees form an integrated network which has a mesmerizing atmosphere during the dark.
To nurture global entrepreneurship in the students, a session was arranged with Mr Abhijeet Thakur – an Indian origin entrepreneur in Singapore. The nature of being an entrepreneur means that you fully embrace ambiguity and are comfortable with being challenged regularly. Mr. Abhijit Thakur who has been through such challenges and then formed ASI (Affluent Software Innovations Pvt Ltd.). In Singapore students had a opportunity to attend the live session. He followed 3 basic principles in his entire life - i.e. - Humility, Honesty & Innovation and also urged the future entrepreneurs to follow it. He clubbed management principles with spirituality which really influenced the students. "Grab the opportunity which comes to your way" was the success mantra given to students by Mr. Abhijit Thakur.
The program also included some leisure activity which was clubbed with learning through observation and experience. The students explored the Universal Studios at Sentosa, Singapore. As a very famous idiom says, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. However, BRIMS has mastered the art of knowing exactly what students need and chalks out a perfect action plan for the same. Visit to Universal Studios expanded student’s horizon on entertainment management. Moreover, students got to learn about the scope of marketing perspective as each ride had merchandise stores of their respective themes at their exits. The flawless management, impeccable hospitality, safety protocols, customer service and operations of the Universal Studio is an exemplary demonstration of world-class management. From the simplest innovation to engage tourists in a queue using entertaining gadgets to general upkeep and maintenance of the place was a field learning for the students. To add to the creativity element, the theme park is designed in such a way that it is equally enjoyed by the young and the old alike. The rides are for different age groups so that each one can get cherishing memories for lifetime.
While management education is all about strategies, business functions and business growth, it is imperative that the young generation be sensitized about the responsibility of a business towards all stakeholders, which also includes the community at large. BRIMS manoeuvres students to not only develop 21st century skills, but also nurtures problem-solving and innovation to be able to contribute to the development of the country at large.
