Do we Leave the Organizations or The Bosses?

Leadership, people management, being a team player etc. are some words that most of us have heard at training sessions or HR driven initiatives. How much do these traits impact the life of an employee is what I understood from my friend Reena.

Reena and I happened to catch up over coffee after quite a long time. As a person Reena is very jovial and light hearted but this time she had a stressed look and exhausted expression on her face. I had to know what was wrong and she replied the reason for her stress was that her current boss has resigned from his position.

I wondered how that affected her as to lose her peace of mind. Having worked in a corporate I understand people move on for better opportunities and growth.

Reena then explained the entire scenario. The concern was not just the current manager resigning but the apprehensions were majorly about the new boss. The new manager being from the same organization, was quite known to be arrogant, not a people’s person, created rifts between team-mates and came across as quite authoritative. Now the whole was worried as to what would happen next. The team so far was quite productive and satisfied as the current manager had created an amiable working structure and always motivated the team to work and succeed together.

Now in this case Reena was contemplating resigning from her current role than suffer under the new manager.

Now this got me pondering. Reena was a focused career oriented girl, quite matured with in decision-making, at the growing stage of her career; and now she was planning to quit a job where she performing extremely well. I tried talk to her and asked her to rethink upon her decision, but she had made up her mind.

That day I understood why people say that we don’t quit the organizations but we leave our bosses. A recent Gallup poll of more than 1 million employed U.S. workers concluded that the No. 1 reason people quit their jobs is a bad boss or immediate supervisor. 75% of workers who voluntarily left their jobs did so because of their bosses and not the position itself. In spite of how good a job may be, people will quit if the reporting relationship is not healthy.

It is leaders who create a good working environment in the organization and are a strong reason for our performance. It is proven fact that a good working environment, peer support and healthy culture in the workplace have a direct impact on the performance of the employees. That day Reena didn’t resign from her work but she resigned from her new boss.

After few days I checked with her on what was she doing and she shared that her organization didn’t accept her resignation but valued her decision of not working with the boss and hence gave her a new department, a new role and new opportunity to work on. She was very happy and excited again. Somewhere her good work had rewarded her back.

Hence as rightly said by Richard Branson, “Respect is how to treat everyone, not just those you want to impress.”
