Plastics today is part of human life. The everyday life without plastics is unimaginable, in all developing Nations. A Ban on single use plastic has been a great discussion, for the last two decades. There are devastating effects on the use of single use plastic. The single use life of plastic is about 20 minutes.
“No cost” and” convenience” are the two main benefits of single use plastic. Though there are arguments to Ban the single use plastic, there are other views having concerns about the employment and the livelihood of the employed workforce. There are hundreds of millions of plastic products made available all over the world each year. In spite of created awareness, the demand for single use plastic has been continuously increasing. More than 20 million tons of single use plastic found to be floating at oceans. Apart from that, big lakes, rivers and water bodies are secretly filled with single use plastic. More than 125 countries actively pledged to ban single use plastic but the participation and cooperation is not encouraging.
The plastic bags kill the animals, birds at land and also it endangers the sea creatures. The sea creatures sometimes get entangled and die and at other times they eat it and die. On rough estimates more than one lakh marine mammals killed each year due to the plastic bags at oceans. The people have been educated enough about recycled plastic, and also the recycling is encouraged at industry level. The price of such bags has been deliberately kept high to discourage the recycled plastic bags usage. The consumers extend very poor cooperation in many countries.
Since the collection and disposal of the mentioned plastic bags found to be convenient for the employed work force of waste disposal activity, the usage is not going southwards. If other alternatives are available then the customers might change their mind in few years. When the recycling of plastic is made compulsory then we may expect less plastic at land and water. Since plastic is affecting the ecosystem the conscious efforts to create awareness about this is the only solution.
When the seriousness about these effects have been put in the very young minds from kinder garden, we might expect a complete change in the next 20 years. The negativity of plastic should be introduced at nursery level, so that the young minds will definitely ensure better future without plastic. The current generation should be continuously bombarded with CSR activities, advertisements and awareness programs. Wherever necessary penalties should be applied strictly. The organisations and governments should come together and solve the issue of plastic along with the excellent support of plastic users.
