It was Saturday morning, I entered my cabin with weekend mood. I could find one student- Mr.Piyush (Name Changed) waiting near my cabin with purpose to express his concerns on getting selected through interviews organized by placement cell of the institute. He was very hesitating to share his concerns initially. I offered him tea with snacks and started communicating with him to ensure his comfort. He started expressing his concern and shared that he was consistently rejected in 5 interviews that he faced recently. He had lost his confidence for appearing further opportunities and had lost clarity on direction for further actions. I started understanding the root cause of his rejections and found that he was a candidate with below average communication skills. The reason behind his all rejections was his inability to express his ideas and skills. I decided to work on his confidence and motivation.
Confidence comes from preparation. I counselled him with different examples where rejection does not mean failures. I requested him to write one page on- Tell me something about yourself as first assignment. He sincerely started working on the same and he got the write up corrected from few faculties within the same week. Every day he started practicing communication. We worked on preparation on frequently asked questions in the interview. We decided to work on preparation for most frequently asked questions as per the vocabulary/language he was comfortable with. After a month, leading FMCG organisation agreed to recruit from our campus for the profile of sale and marketing executive. We started preparing Mr.Piyush on company’s products and offerings. Mr.Piyush had focused and go-getter attitude. We believe that 5 minutes interview is insufficient to understand capability of candidate. Mr.Piyush’s capability was getting persuaded because of his communication skills. I had in detailed discussion with the recruiter about all the candidates who were getting interviewed that day.
Preparation and confidence of Mr. Piyush worked and he was selected for the said position. His parents personally visited institute to convey their gratitude towards all the faculties and placement cell.
One year after, I was invited by the Management of the same company to conduct live and on-field training sessions for sales executives of the company. I got to know that he was one of the attendees. I was happy with the thought to meet him after one year. I was requested by management to take all sales executive to field and demonstrate them selling skills with practical exposure. We decided Ghatkopar market to visit next day. To my surprise, when I was about to get down from the train, I got a call from Mr.Piyush saying that he is voluntarily waiting for me near the railway station to pick me up to accompany me for the visit. It was really touching moment for me, when I observed all his colleagues treating me with respect. I then got to know that he had shared all his journey with his colleagues already about how I supported him for preparation and selection. I observed every now and then he was caring for me through out the filed sales visit. We shared our lunch on railway platform that day. I could observe tears in his eyes when we ended our visit and was catching the train for my destination. God is really great that he purposely gives opportunities to all of us for helping, supporting, learning and loving each other.
Today Mr.Piyush is marketing manager with well known FMCG brand- AMUL.
